Omar emphasizes targeted completion of works

Govt approves 10 mega projects for up-gradation of amenities

Since his taking over as Chief Minister of J&K on January 5, 2009, Mr. Omar Abdullah has laid greater stress on fast-track completion of projects aimed at up-gradation of basic amenities in urban and rural areas. His directions to improve public delivery system and quick response to public needs have yielded encouraging results and a new energy has been infused in the entire administrative set up at all levels.

During the last six months of Mr. Omar’s stewardship, as many as 10 major projects have been sanctioned for development of water supply, rehabilitation of slum dwellers, urban transport, construction of abattoirs, beautification and cleanliness works in the twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar and other towns. The projects launched in the Housing and Urban Development sector are likely to cost about Rs. 317 crore.

These projects include Rs. 120-crore water supply project at Sukhnag, Srinagar, Rs. 35-crore two projects for rehabilitation of slum-dwellers of 22 localities in Jammu, Rs. 22.37-crore INSITU rehabilitation at Wanganpora, Sumberbug, Tibetan Colony and Leper Colony in Srinagar, Rs. 33-crore water supply project at Sopore, Rs.37.48-crore slum clearance in 13 towns of Kashmir region, Rs. 5.12-crore slum clearance in two towns of Jammu region, construction of modern abattoir at a cost of Rs. 20.70 crore at Jammu, construction of modern abattoir at a cost of Rs. 22.58 crore at Srinagar and Rs. 21 crore for urban transport project.

The implementing agencies for these projects are Jammu Municipal Corporation, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, PHE Kashmir and Urban Local Bodies, Kashmir and Jammu.

The Chief Minister has stressed on speedy progress on the projects so that benefits accrue to the people within the targeted timeframe.

Similarly, Chief Minister has emphasized on accelerating pace of work on various schemes under execution in R&B, PHE and other sectors in rural areas. He has underscored the need for carrying forward development process with a missionary spirit, adding timeframe fixed for completion of works should be the benchmark of functioning of the government functionaries.
