3 day workshop on Punjabi – Kashmiri translation begins at KU

Vice Chancellor Kashmir University Prof. Riyaz Punjabi today underlined the need for rendering more of the Kashmir works in to other Indian languages and vice versa. He was speaking at the inaugural event of a 3 day workshop on Punjabi – Kashmiri translation and Vice Versa organized by the Sahitya Academy, New Delhi in association with the Department of Kashmiri, University of Kashmir at Gandhi Bhawan. .
Speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor said that translation of works of other languages into Kashmiri has been a missing link in the cultural and literary activities in Kashmir, and this workshop is a good lead to fill this gap. "India is a country with diverse cultures, languages and dialects and it is time that these dialects should be closely studied and different works should be rendered in other languages to make them accessible to a large chunk of people He added. He further assured the academy that the university would always be willing to collaborate with the academy to further the horizon of literary excellence in the state. VC spelled out the influence of Punjabi language and literature into Kashmir languages and vice versa and said that adopting new trends from other languages helps the host language in evolution and development. He added that diversity in languages adds to their richness.
Sahitya Academy has been conducting workshops of such nature in collaboration with the University of Kashmir. Earlier a similar workshop was also conducted in collaboration with the department of English wherein a Kashmiri title "After Mehjoor" was translated into Punjabi under the title "Mehjoor de baad". The book was also released on the occasion by Prof. Punjabi.
The Vice President of Sahitya Academy, Prof. Satinder Singh Noor, also the editor of the title released on the occasion said that the main objective of the Sahitya Academy is to meet the challenge posed by a multi-lingual society. He said that Sahitya Academy ceaselessly endeavors to develop a serious literary culture through the publication of journals, monographs, and individual creative works of every genre, anthologies, encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, who's who and histories of literature. While laying stress on the academy’s desire to harness the power of diversity in language that the region possesses he said that academy has plans to publish magazines in all the 24 languages that we operate in besides the journal on Oral literature that is already being worked upon.
The program was conducted by Ms. Renu Mohan Bhan, Deputy Secretary, Sahitya Academy. The inaugural function was attended by distinguished dignitaries from the state and outside. Prof. Rehman Rahi, Prof. Bashir Ahmed Nehwi Director, Iqbal Institute of Culture and Philosophy, Prof. Shaad Ramzan Head Department of Kashmiri, Prof. Shafi Shouq, Peerzada Bashir Ahmed, Head, Department of Arabic, and Prof Aziz Hajni, convenor sahita academy Kashmir chapter were also present on the occasion. Senior journalist and Chairman group of Kashmir Times Mr. Ved Bhasin was present on the occasion as well.
An Urdu program would also be held on the 25th of September at Gandhi Bhawan that would be inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Kashmir University, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, wherein poets and writers in Urdu would be invited from Kashmir and other parts of India to present their works. This would also be held at Gandhi Bhawan of the University.
