International bidding process begins to modernize SKIMS: Dr. Zargar


Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah today called for mass education about preventive measures to check the growth of cancer. He said the silver line in the black cloud is that one third of the total cancer incidents could be prevented by awareness regarding the disease.

Addressing the National and International Faculty of elate professors and doctors of oncology discipline after inaugurating the Annual Conference of Indian Society of Medical and Pediatric Oncology at SKICC here, he said the cancer has grown in size for so many reasons in the State and faculty has to concentrate and address the issue effectively and professionally.

Mr. Omar said that Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has been fully equipped to provide advance treatment for cancer. “The modern regional cancer treatment centre established in the SKIMS is being further strengthened and upgraded to become more effective in providing better and latest treatment to the patients. However, much headway in preventing the disease can be achieved by educating the people about the measures they have to take to remain healthy and keep the cancer away from them”, he said.

The Chief Minister said that the regional cancer centre at SKIMS has to grow further and come up to the expectations of people to tackle the challenges of the dreaded disease in future. Appreciating the services of Oncology Department of SKIMS, Mr. Omar referred to the good service of the Department of Oncology to the patients. “You are doing a commendable job”, he told the SKIMS management and expressed hope that a comprehensive treatment programme for the cure and prevention of cancer will be further updated and upgraded in the hospital soon so that patients have not to travel outside the State for specialized treatment”, he said adding that it is also heartening that SKIMS will shortly provide bone-marrow transplant facility to the critical cancer patients. “This will be a landmark step in the progress and growth of the State’s prestigious tertiary hospital”, he added.

Mr. Omar said that government has underlined the healthcare sector as priority concern and measures were afoot to provide best available medical facilities to the people across the State. He said Super-Specialty Hospitals have a pivotal role to play in rendering modern and latest available medical facilities to the people.

While wishing very success to the Conference and expressing hope that the deliberations and exchange of expert ideas would benefit the State, Mr. Omar suggested the visiting professors and doctors to also find some time to visit countryside and tourist places to relish the autumn beauty in the Valley. “This is the unique, beautiful and charming season we have. I want that you take some part of this beauty with you to remember forever and leave some part of your knowledge and expertise here for us to take its advantage”, he told the elate doctors of high national and international repute.

Speaking on the occasion, the Director SKIMS, Prof. Dr. Abdul Hamid Zargar gave resume of the measures underway to upgrade and improve various healthcare facilities in the hospital. He said Chief Minister has approved various schemes to modernize the hospital and expand medical facilities. He said Chief Minister has recently approved Rs. 15 crore for the regional cancer centre while as construction blocks to house various super-specialty units are being built at an accelerated pace.

Dr. Zargar said that national and international bidding process for upgradation of SKIMS on modern lines has been put in place and measures were afoot to improve the functioning of the hospital. He said three shifts to cater to the patient needs have been put in place in SKIMS under the directions of Chief Minister while as a maternity unit has also been made functional in SKIMS hospital at Bemina. He said the government led by Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah has made available adequate funds and logistic support to the SKIMS for its growth and modernization. “Onus lies on us to utilize the unprecedented government help”, he maintained.

The President, Indian Society of Oncology, Dr. Dinesh Pandarkar in his address said that the professors and doctors from the country and abroad are participating in the 4-day Conference, first of its kind in the Valley.

He said that deliberations to study various causes and remedial measures to treat the cancer would be held during the different sessions. He said the reasons behind particular cancers in the particular regions will also be analyzed and discussed threadbare to frame expert opinion about the treatment.

The Head of the Oncology Department, SKIMS thanked the Chief Minister for inaugurating the conference. He also welcomed the visiting doctors from all over the country and abroad.

Among others the Secretary General, Indian Society of Oncology, Prof. H. Malhotra was also present at the conference.
