Centre approves Rs 300 for SKIMS expansion

Central Government has approved Rs 300 crore under Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Programme (PMRP) for expanding infrastructure of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Kashmir Valley. It was a dream of Sher-i-Kashmir, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the grandfather of state Chief Minister (CM) Omar Abdullah to make SKIMS one of the distinguished institutes of the country, so the CM made active persuasion and the Central Govt approval. With this amount a new block would be constructed, 150 bedded unit will be established and also an emergency and accidental units will be set up in the institute. Once the expansion is completed in this Institute, it will become one of the biggest institutes of the country. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today visited SKIMS here, went round different wards and interacted with the patients admitted in the Institute. He urged the Director SKIMS and Management to take extra care of the patients coming from different parts of the Valley with the hope to get cured with the help of efficient management and available infrastructure. The Chief Minister said that it was a dream of Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah to make this Institute one of the distinguished institutes of the country. He said that the main purpose behind establishing this Institute was to provide proper medical facilities which were not available in the Valley and poor patients were being referred to AIMS and other hospitals outside the State. The Director informed the Chief Minister that all the construction works will be completed within one month. The Chief Minister alongwith Education Minister, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr. Taj Mohi-ud-Din, his Political Advisors, Mr. Devender Singh Rana and Mr. Mubarak Gul, senior officers and doctors went round the premises outside SKIMS, and was shown the construction work of new blocks. He said that all provisions should be made to equip all the units with emergency facilities and infrastructure so that precious lives are saved. He also stressed the need for upgradation of all wards as part of the project so that the real purpose for which the Institute was made by Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah could be realized. The representatives of SKIMS Medical Association met the Chief Minister and sought redressal of their demands.
