Abhinav seeks CBI probe in selection of firemen, firemen-drivers

  • Urges LG Sinha to initiate CBI probe, ensure punishment to culprits

JAMMU: Senior Advocate Abhinav Sharma, Spokesperson, BJP, J&K, on Saturday urged the Hon’ble Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to initiate CBI enquiry into the allegations of illegalities in the selection process of posts of Firemen and Firemen drivers, the advertisements for which were published in way back 2013.

Briefing media persons at Party Headquarters here, the senior BJP leader alleged that the there is ample evidence to prove that the selection to the aforesaid posts is under the shadow of neck-deep corruption as already the entire process remained tainted and full of hiccups. He appealed to LG Manoj Sinha to intervene and order CBI enquiry to ensure justice to the youth of the UT as there are several points in the present selection process hinting at gross irregularities.

Abhinav said that the qualification for firemen was eight standard and for the Firemen Driver was 8th Pass along with  driving license of heavy goods vehicle and the last date of the submission of the application was 18th of April 2013. He said that the department came to know about illegalities after the conduct of physical endurance test and written test and therefore in 2016, the then Principal Secretary ordered to annul the entire process claiming that proxy candidates took part in the aforesaid written exam and even mobile phones were used inside the exam centres.

“Upon this, people knocked the doors of court and questioned the logic behind annulling the entire process when there was misconduct only during the written exam. Thereupon the court ordered that only the written test should be re-conducted and subsequently the order in this regard was issued. After that, some aspirants again approached the court and alleged malpractice in the exam and after going through their plea, the court asked them to first contact the concerned Principal Secretary.

As a consequence, the court directed to hold the written test afresh but with changed staff and by some other agency debarring the existing TCL, which was responsible for the entire recruitment process earlier. It was surprising that the new firm which was given the task by the concerned authority to re-conduct the exam in April 2018 was owned by the owner of the earlier firm TCL namely Maharaj Krishan Valli”, Abhinav said, adding that this was not enough as the government changed the set criteria of 65 marks for 8th standard, 5 additional marks for Class 10 and 5 marks each for Class 12th and Graduation, and 20 marks for interview.

“Later, the government further changed the criteria by dispensing with the marks stipulated for class 10 and graduation”, the BJP leader said, adding that the majority of students from classes 8th and 10th were selected in the written test conducted a third time.

The BJP Spokesperson, J&K, said that the selection process is also questionable because four successful candidates of the same family from Budgam and 2 from a family of Pulwama have made it to the list thus raising a doubt over the genuineness of the selection process. He further raised a point that on 3rd October 2020 (Saturday), the list of written examination was placed on the website but the same was not published in newspapers and on the very next day, viz October 4, 2020, the appointment orders were issued asking the successful candidates to join within two days.

“This was a record in the history of J&K but what was more intriguing was the fact that a rider was included that those candidates having deficiency in documents can also joined the duties in couple of days raising a big question mark on the entire process”, Abhinav said, adding that the sequence of events and the way things have been accomplished there is every chance that something fishy has been allowed in this recruitment process.

The BJP Spokesperson further alleged that the written test was conducted on September 21 but the same paper was available with the students on September 19, two days before the conduct of the written test as many aspirants have the proof of the same and are ready to give an affidavit in this regard. He also mentioned there were about 20 families in which 2 aspirants from each family were selected while five aspirants from a single family of Budgam were selected.

Abhinav said that LG should take cognizance of the matter and order a CBI inquiry on the pattern of inquiry conducted in SI recruitment as this is important to fix the responsibility, punish the culprits, and deliver justice to the genuine aspirants.
