International Conference on Materials for Sustainable Development ICMSD-2022 Begins at CU Jammu

JAMMU: A two-day "International Conference on Materials for Sustainable Development ICMSD-2022” was inaugurated today here at the Central University of Jammu. It was organized by the Department of Nano Sciences and Materials under the patronage of Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Central University of Jammu. An MoU was also exchanged between the Central University of Jammu and Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST). It will enable both the institutions in research collaboration and student- faculty exchange programs. The IIST will also mentor the newly started B.Tech Avionic course at the Central University of Jammu.

Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, former Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST), and President Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Delhi graced the occasion as Chief guest. He discussed the 4M's of Material Sciences i.e. Mechanics, Materials, Machines, and Manufacturing. He emphasized, "The opportunities are huge in this field of Science and Technology but along with that there come the challenges as well and Sustainable Development is one of those challenges". He said that these issues can not only be solved by advancements in the field of Science but human greed and apathy towards the surrounding environment needs to be critically analyzed too. He underlined that scientific temper is a way of key thinking and consumption of scientific knowledge comes from regulations.

In his presidential remarks Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, the Central University of Jammu extended his heartiest welcome to the pool of intellectuals, dignitaries, and respected guests of the event. He said that organizing this conference is itself a great achievement and it is also very timely to talk about this issue of Sustainable Development. He emphasized on the role of material science in our daily lives. He further said, "We should try that all the materials that are developed in the labs of our university must get patented". He also encouraged students to come up with their own start-up ideas and become job givers, not job seekers.

Dr.B.S Bhau, Dean School of Life Sciences, Central University of Jammu, hailed the efforts of the Department of Nano Sciences for organizing this conference. He highlighted the facilities like ISRO Centre and Kalam Centre for Science & Technology in CUJ which will grant exposure to the students and scholars for conducting cutting-edge research. Moreover, he traced the development of Material Sciences as a distinct discipline. He highlighted the problems associated with plastic as a material and the need for critical research directed toward sustainable development.

The conference spanned over seven sessions including keynote lectures and plenary talks starting with ceremonial lamp lighting followed by releasing of the "Abstract Book " of the said conference. This was followed by a welcome address by Dr. Vinay Kumar, Head, the Department of Nano Science and Materials, where he talked about the main aim behind conducting this event. He said, "This International Conference aims to provide a forum for researchers from various areas of Material Sciences and Technology to present the latest cutting- edge research findings and share their experience and research outcomes of Interdisciplinary
research".

The first technical session began with a keynote lecture by Prof. Sabu Thomas, Hon'ble VC, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerela who had joined the conference in online mode. He highlighted the importance and applications of Nano-cellulose and the need for research in green Nano-materials. Prof. Ravinder Pandey, Department Chair, Physics, MTU, Houghton, the USA in his plenary talk focused on "Next generation lightweight composite and energy-related materials". Another
plenary speaker was professor M.R. Anantharaman, UGC-BSR Fellow, Cochin University of Science and Technology who talked about the "Importance of Graphene". Other technical sessions were taken by Prof. Kuldeep Raina, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor M.S. Ramiah University of Applied Sciences, Bengaluru, Prof. Kuruvilla Joseph, Dean, IIST Department of Space, GOI, and Prof. S.A. Hashmi, the University of Delhi followed by oral and poster presentations by researcher scholars and students of various institutions.

After this, all the respected dignitaries were presented with mementos. Dr. Pawan Conference Convener,,Department of Nano Sciences proposed the formal vote of thanks.
