Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital performs three cochlear Implant Surgeries – Changing lives of especially-abled children

KATRA: As yet another clinical accomplishment, the ENT Department of SMVDNSH performed 3 successful Cochlear Implant Surgeries on congenitally deaf children on 14.02.2023. All the beneficiaries had profound bilateral hearing loss and since they couldn’t hear, they weren’t able to speak either. Out of three, the surgeries of two patients were sponsored by the Shrine Board.

Sh. Naresh Kumar, grandfather of one child shared that his family had lost all hopes as the cost of cochlear implant surgery (the only recommended treatment for their child) was beyond the family’s financial means. Thus, it was a huge relief when based on the recommendation of Dr. Rohan Gupta (Consultant ENT) and scrutiny of his economic status, the management of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board consented to sponsor the treatment.

The Board sponsored treatment has come as a pass for the poor child to venture into the world of words and sounds. Similarly, Sh. Ashok Kumar, father of another child was all praise for the Chairman of Shrine Board (Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of J&K), the CEO of Shrine Board and the entire team of Narayana Hospital for granting a new lease of life to his son.

As an apt manifestation of Hospital’s clinical capabilities, the three surgeries in reference were performed through in-house expertise comprising guidance by Dr. Sunil Kotwal (Consultant ENT), execution by a strong surgical team led by Dr. Rohan Gupta (Consultant ENT), anaesthesia support by team led by Dr. Pankaj Gupta (HOD Anaesthesia) and post-operative management by Dr. Anand Yelne (Consultant Pediatrics).

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sunil Kotwal, the mentor of SMVDNSH’s Cochlear Implant Programme highly appreciated the philanthropic work of Shrine Board explaining how the relentless support of Board has been instrumental in SMVDNSH becoming the only centre in the entire UT where Cochlear Implant Surgeries have been performed on regular basis after April, 2018.

“The surgeries were quite successful and free of any complications. Hence; after retaining at the Hospital for a few days for general observation, all children have been discharged in good condition" said Dr. Rohan Gupta. He mentioned that children with congenital hearing issues invariably encounter developmental delay in the context of speech, language and cognition, that hampers their education and career; and in-turn, leads to loss of physical and economic productivity.  Dr. Rohan advised the similarly positioned parents to not to remain ignorant of the problems of their broods relating to hearing and speech at adolescent stage. Simple screening at birth and timely clinical intervention is potent of completely transforming the life of a deaf and dumb child. Dr. Rohan added that hearing correction through Cochlear Implant Surgeries is possible only if the surgeries happen at a young age of upto 5 years (till the age of 6-7 years in exceptional cases).

Dr. Gopal Sharma, Chief administrative Officer, SMVDNSH expressed immense pleasure over the children getting the gift of hearing and becoming capable of pursuing their dreams in life. He added that the Board’s management has always stood tall when it comes to reaching out to the poor and needy patients in need of financial support. In particular, he applauded the dynamic, expedient and aspiring leadership of the CEO, Shrine Board in dealing with issues of philanthropy with a touch of humanity. He also revealed that from April, 2018 to February, 2023, the Board has sponsored cochlear implant surgeries of 19 deaf and dumb children.
