Symposium on ‘Metabolic Syndrome, Endocrinology of Bone’ at SKIMS

A day long continuous medical education (CME) programme on metabolic syndrome and endocrinology of bone was held at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), here today. The experts having specialisation in these medical branches shared their experience and ideas about these disorders. Guest faculty comprised of senior consultants from AIIMS, INMAS and MAMC besides Joint director and Head of Endocrinology department in the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied sciences (INMAS), Dr. R.K.Marwaha, Dr. M. L. Khurana from Department of Endocrinology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and Dr Dinesh Dhanwal Prof and Head Endocrinology section Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), New Delhi.

The Organising secretary of the seminar, Dr. Mohd. Ashraf Ganie presented a brief message about the importance of the programme. Professor Imtiyaz Ali Dean SKIMS highlighted the importance of the need based training for physicians and paediatricians about these disorders of children in rural areas.

Director SKIMS and Head of the Endocrinology department, Dr. Abdul Hamid Zargar, on the occasion informed the audience about the research work carried out by the department during the last two decades for identifying these disorders in the valley. Dr. Zargar gave an in depth account of published works undertaken by SKIMS on metabolic disorders. He also threw light on high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Kashmir valley as has been reported and published recently by an international medical journal.

Dr R.K.Marwaha, Dr Dinesh, Dr Khurana, Dr Bashir Ahmad Laway, Dr Bashir Ahmad Charoo and Dr Altaf Ahmad shah also spoke on the occasion. The Seminar was followed by a panel discussion in which large number of medicos participated and presented their valuable views.

The symposium was attended by faculty members and students from SKIMS, SKIMS Medical College and GMC Srinagar besides senior doctors from the valley.
