‘Books are your best guides and teachers’

*KU, IIPA hold debate on Private Coaching

Asserting that the debate over private coaching was unending, the Economic Advisor to J&K Government, Jalil Ahmad Khan, on Saturday stressed that books were the best teachers and guides of students. Addressing students and academics at the one-day debate on “Private Coaching” at the University of Kashmir, he said, “The debate over the issue is unending. However I strongly believe that books are the best guides and teachers of students.” The debate was organised by the Indian Institute of Public Administration in collaboration with the varsity’s Department of Students Welfare. Khan dwelt at length about the changes that the educational system in Kashmir has underwent over the years. “I urge students to follow the three-step formula when it comes to their academics. One is that before going to their classes, they must revise what they read the previous day. In class they must ask questions to their teachers to clear any doubts. And they must again revise when they go back to their homes,” Khan, who was the guest of honour on the occasion, said. The director, Academic Staff College, Prof Meraj-ud-Din was also present on the dais. He talked at length about the advantages and disadvantages of private coaching. The topic of the debate was “Has private coaching become inevitable due to the present standard of education.” Dr Ashok Bhat too chaired the dais. In her welcome address, the Dean, Students Welfare, Prof Nilofar Khan said the debate was an attempt to address this vital issue of private coaching. “The DSW is committed to provide a platform to the students to discuss these issues which concern our student fraternity directly,” she said. Students from different colleges participated in the debate. The first prize (Rs 2000 cash) was bagged by Abdul Basit Bazaz from Islamia College of Science and Commerce. The second prize (Rs 1500) went to Saba Firdous, Womens College, Nawakadal and the third prize (Rs 1000) was bagged by Zahid Nabi from SP College. Irum Qazi (GMC, Srinagar) and Amir Ali Chistie bagged the first and second consolation prize respectively. Those who chaired the dais and acted as judges included Prof S M Afzal Qadri, Dr Lily Want, Prof Khusheed Ahmad, Prof N.A Nadeem and Dr Shahid Rasool (Director EMMRC) who also acted as the Rapporteur. The secretary IIPA, Dr G.N Qasba, conducted the proceedings of the function.
