Government to help all efforts aimed at welfare of journalists


Describing media an important pillar of democratic set up and a significant medium to ventilate the views and aspirations of people, Chief Minister (CM), Omar Abdullah said that he was keen to seek welfare and development of the journalists and non-journalists associated with print and electronic media. “My government would help and nurture all efforts aimed at ameliorating the lot of media fraternity in the State”, he said.

The Chief Minister was speaking to the Members of the National Wage Board for Working Journalists and Non-Journalistic staff of media organizations, at a meeting here today. The 13-Member Wage Board led by its Chairman, Justice G. R. Majithia met Mr. Omar and discussed matters pertaining to the welfare of journalists and other employees working in media organizations.

The Board Members while deliberating on various issues relating to the welfare of journalists and non-journalistic staff of media organizations discussed the matters pertaining to establishing press colonies at Jammu and Srinagar, distribution of advertisements to the newspapers and timely payment of add bills.

Omar told the members that government was actively considering the proposals given by the journalist society to it for the establishment of press colonies at Jammu and Srinagar.

The Wage Board which arrived at Jammu on October 6, met various organizations of journalists from print and electronic media at Jammu during the two days stay there.

The Board Members arrived at Srinagar on October 8 and had similar meetings with the Members and organizations of Journalist fraternity. The Board Members also met the non-journalistic staff and the management of media organizations during their visit of Jammu and Kashmir. The Board Members are expected to leave on October 11.

The Secretary, Labour and Employment, Mr. Farooq Ahmad Peer who was also present in the meeting briefed about the engagements and meetings of the Board Members in the State and presented resume of their recommendations.
