NATIONAL SEMINAR: Social Science research showing declining trend

Asserting that Social Science Research is showing a declining trend in Jammu and Kashmir and other states, Vice Chancellor Kashmir University Prof Riyaz Punjabi monday lamented that not much attention is paid to research methodology and deisgn which he said is basic to all research especially on Social Sciences.

Prof Punjabi was speaking at a two day National Seminar on Social Science Research in Kashmir organized by P G Deptt of Political Science University of Kashmir.

Vice Chancellor stressed on the need for holding orientation courses and lectures on Research Methodology to orient student and scholars and familiarize them with new techniques in Research Methodology. “Articulate your ideas without being emotional” VC said to the scholars adding that not emotions but your wit should guide you in research. VC said the aim of this two seminar is to achieve what we believe is our mission that is quality in higher education. VC said that he is optimistic that two days deliberations will focus to address issues vital for peace and harmony in J&K. Vice Chancellor Kashmir University released the departmental profile of the PG Deptt of Political Science on the occasion.

Earlier in her welcome address Prof Asifa Jan, Head P G Deptt of Political Science said that to train younger generation in Politics, Diplomacy development, Administration, media and lobbing KU faculty and research scholars, over the decades, have provided expert guidance to institutions, organizations and government over the issues of unemployment, electoral politics, development administration, etc Dr. Asifa added. We also aim for the futuristic perspective of introducing not only job oriented courses but new courses like peace and conflict resolution, Politics and the Corporate World Trade and Energy, Diplomacy, Globalization, Federalism, Political Sociology, Political Economy, etc Prof Asifa further said. These new courses will supplement the exiting comprehensive subjects like Political Thought and Theory International relations, Public Administration, Comparative Politics, Indian Political System, Politics of Jammu and Kashmir, International Law, Development Administration, South Asia, West Asia, Persian Gulf Into-Pak relations, Contemporary Debates in political Theory and Human Right.

Chief Guest on the occasion Prof Kamal Chenoy from Jawhar Lal Nehru University said that power elite are not committed to the values of Indian Constitution that has eroded democratic intuitions. He said duties of social scientists are to built a constituency for peace in Kashmir. He hoped that this two day conference addresses sensitive issues in Jammu and Kashmir as well.

Prof Ehsan-ul-Haq from Jawhar Lal Nehru University who was the guest of honour on the occasion was all praise for University of Kashmir for holding two conference such vital theme. “Social Science Research is need of the our in the contemporary times” he said. Dr Sanjeeva Warsi presented vote of thanks.

The conference will have total of five sessions in which some 22 research papers on vital themes in social research will be read. Galaxy of intellectuals social scientists, members of the civil society students and scholars of sociology and social work participated in the national workshop.
