Punjab Governor evinces ­keen interest in Kashmir handicrafts

‘1st Chandigarh National Crafts Mela’


‘1st Chandigarh National Crafts Mela’ kicked off to a colorful start here at Kalagram. The mela shall conclude on November 2, 2009. Stalls of Kashmir handicrafts with exquisite beauty displayed their exhibits for sale. Exhibition-cum-sale have received tremendous response from the visitors. Brisk sale of Kashmir handicrafts has been reported at the fair.

Governor of Punjab and Administration, U.T. Chandigarh, Dr. S.F. Rodrigues, also visited the Kashmiri handicraft stalls and evinced keen interest in the exhibits on display at the fair. The quality of Handicraft goods from Kashmir stole the show. Governor desired that the Kashmir handicrafts should be exhibited in crafts mela Chandigarh every year as a regular feature and assured that all the facilities will be provided to the artisans from Kashmir. He also expressed satisfaction over the quality and unique design of products from Kashmir.

It is to mention that the Department of Handicrafts J&K Govt. is putting in all efforts to hold the exhibitions at the national and international Trade Fairs to open new marketing channels for Kashmiri handicrafts and also to combat the economic recession in the handicrafts sector. The Director Handicrafts, Mr. Shokat A. Zergar gave details of all the items and articles showcased at the Fair to the Governor.

The Director alongwith Joint Director, Handicrafts, Jammu Mr. R.A. Zargar personally supervised the exhibition of the stalls at Kalagram.
