The State Transport Authority (STA) is being reactivated to provide hassle-free and comfortable transport facilities to passengers on all routes in the State, said the Minister for Transport and CAPD, Qamar Ali Akhoon while reviewing the working of the Department at a high level meeting here today. Minister of State for Transport and CAPD, Mr. Shabir Ahmad Khan, Commissioner/Secretary Transport and CAPD, Mr. Asgar Ali Samoon, Transport Commissioner, Mr. A. K. Mohanty besides Director State Motor Garages, Mr. G. A.Sofi were among others present in the meeting. The two-hour long meeting held threadbare discussions on various agenda points, including smooth plying of transport and upgradation of infrastructure, strict implementation of the rules in vogue, speedy revenue generation and improved facilities to passengers particularly those belonging to remote and hilly areas. Qamar Ali exhorted the concerned authorities to work with zeal and dedication for bringing improvement in the working of the department. The Minister directed the authorities that issuance of route permits for passenger vehicles besides driving licenses to unemployed educated youth should be given first priority. Minister of State for Transport stressed for plying smooth traffic on all routes of the State. He called for intensifying motor vehicle checking and mobilizing squads to check over-loading for ensuring safety of the people. He directed the concerned authorities to identify land in all districts wherever the department needs to construct its accommodation for RTO and ARTO offices. Shabir Khan asked the concerned authorities for issuance of timely driving licenses as per the norms. He said issuance of permits for plying passenger vehicles in remote and hilly routes should be expedited and route permits should be issued strictly to the concerned transporters within stipulated time-frame. He called for taking early steps for plying transport on new routes well in time so that the people of these areas would not suffer while getting transport facilities. Transport Commissioner gave a detailed report of working of the department in the meeting and apprised that the department has earned a revenue of Rs 58.62 crore during first seven months of current fiscal from various sources. He said commercial, driving, learning licenses are being issued within seven days by the department to the intending persons after completing all codal formalities. He said new route permits for plying of passenger vehicles on the notified old and new routes is being also issued after completing requisite formalities from the intending months within 15 days. He apprised the meeting that functioning of all toll posts working under the control of Transport department have been modernized and revenue of Rs 94 lakh have been realized only by Lower Munda toll post during last 40 days. The meeting also took a detailed review of State Motor Garages.
