Seeking people’s cooperation in taking forward development agenda of the government, Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Tara Chand has said public should monitor ongoing developmental works in their areas for keeping a check on executing agencies, adding that lacunae, wherever existing, should be brought to the notice of the higher authorities.
“Vigilant public can act as an effective tool to check corruption and mismanagement,” he said and asked people to be self-motivated agencies of change and development.
Addressing a public rally here today, the Deputy Chief Minister said government is aware of the problems of different regions of the State and believes in equitable development. He said area-specific projects are being worked out so that development needs of all the regions are met; adding priority is being given to far-flung and hilly areas lagging in development index. He said basic infrastructure like road connectivity, power and drinking water are being strengthened to improve living standards of the people.
Mr. Tara Chand said Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi have assured the State government of their full cooperation in the development of the State, which is amply reflected by the representation given to it in the UPA Cabinet. He told them that the Union Health Minister, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is the son of the soil, is shortly visiting the district to review the health scenario of the erstwhile Udhampur and Doda districts.
MLA Chenani, Mr. Krishan Chander Bhagat, former Minister Mr. Jugal Kishore Sharma, President, Udhampur Municipality, Mr. Ashok Gupta, Councilors and prominent citizens were also present on the occasion.
A number of deputations from different parts of the district also called on the Deputy Chief Minister and apprised him of the development-related issues of their respective areas.
The demands put forth by the people included base camp for Amarnath Yatra at Udhampur, employment avenues for rural youth, fresh BPL survey, timely-disbursement of old-age pension, regularization of SC housing colonies, which have been existing for the last 40 years, power supply and better road connectivity.
Mr. Tara Chand assured the deputations that the government would seriously look into their grievances.
Later, the Deputy Chief Minister held a meeting of senior officers of district civil and police administration to review arrangements for smooth conduct of Amaranth Yatra.
Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. Ashok Khajuria informed Mr. Tara Chand that district administration has made adequate arrangements for lodging, drinking water, power, sanitation, traffic regulation besides, free langars are being organized by social and voluntary organizations for the yatris. The security has also been beefed up with special patrolling at the lodging sites of Amarnath yatris as well as National Highway.
Mr. Tara Chand said that keeping with the traditional hospitality of the State, the yatris should not face any problem during their stay in J&K. He asked administration to be fully geared to meet sudden rush of pilgrims, in case they get stranded due to inclement weather.
