Salathia reviews activities of IICT, CDI

The Minister for Industries and Commerce Mr. S. S. Salathia reviewed the progress and activities of Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) and Craft Development Institute (CDI) established since last five years at Srinagar for the Development of Handicraft sector in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

During the review, meeting Minister emphasized the need of training young artisans for the craft sector and the focus to extend such initiatives at district level.

As a strategy for the development of the sector, the Minister called for giving emphasis on upgrading the knowledge and exposure level of trainees at Carpet Training Centres and instructors imparting craft training so that the same is disseminated at district level at a large scale.

The Minister apprised that 200-300 modern carpet looms, developed by IICT, Srinagar shall soon be introduced in the carpet industry for which necessary funds have been allocated by the government.

Appreciating the Post Graduate Programme in Craft Management Entrepreneurial leadership, introduced by CDI, the Minister stressed the need to get it recognized by competent authority so that the graduates of the programme are also eligible for better employment opportunities.

In this regard, the Minister agreed in principle to engage the first batch of students of the above programme as a beginning to professionalize the craft industry and government agencies associated with the promotion of craft sector.

He assured that funds for supporting IICT and CDI on a regular basis shall be included in the budget next year.

The meeting was attended by Director IICT, Director CDI and other senior officers.
