KU to host National Workshop on Advances in Astrophysics
The department of Physics, University of Kashmir, Srinagar is organizing a Workshop on Advances in Astronomy and Astrophysics, jointly with Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune to be held at University of Kashmir, Hazratbal, Srinagar from Nov. 3, 2009 to Nov. 6, 2009. The aim of this workshop is to inspire and update young teachers, research scholars and M. Sc. students about the front-line areas of research in Astronomy and Astrophysics said Prof Farooq Ahmad head department of physics . There are several planned and on-going, ground and space based missions in India and abroad which already have and will further revolutionize our understanding of the Universe. The workshop will cover several current topics in Astrophysics like: Cosmology (N-body simulations, Cosmic Microwave background radiation etc), Galaxy formation, X-ray emission from black hole systems and Astronomy instrumentation added dr Farooq. Some of the leading researchers from premier research institutes of India like IUCAA, HRI, CTP are the invited speakers of this workshop. More than ninety scientists, college and university teachers, research scholars and students are registered participants of this workshop. Interestingly, the timing of the workshop coincides with the establishment of Modern Optical Observational Facility by the Department of Physics, University of Kashmir, at Gulmarg. Aga Syed Ruhullah, Minister for IT, Science and Technology, Animal and Sheep Husbandary will be the Chief Guest and Mr. Khursheed A. Ganie (IAS) Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, will be the Guest of Honour at the inaugural function on November 3, 2009.
